BCORMA: Stewarding the Duffy Lake Trails

Through hard work and a deep love for the trails, the Greater Kamloops Motorcycle Association has transformed Duffy Lake Campground into a model for off-road and family-friendly recreation in BC.

Located at Greenstone Mountain, about 36 km west of Kamloops, Duffy Lake Campground is a perfect venue for a family off-roading holiday. It’s also a favourite site for motorcycle events, drawing riders from all over. We spoke to Dennis Rombough, GKMA’s lead campground host, to learn more about the club’s stewardship of the site.
Dennis recounts that Kent, a GKMA member, was hired to refurbish the campground. GKMA had already earned a reputation for their excellent maintenance of the surrounding trail network, so it made sense when the club was recommended as site stewards. Recreation Sites and Trails BC granted an initial five-year lease.

Since then, GKMA has proved their mettle, keeping the site tidy and caring for everything from collecting fees to pit house management. Aside from access to the trail network, Duffy Lake Campground boasts 52 camping spots, a boat launch, tables, and pit toilets. While naturally popular with off-road enthusiasts, the site is open to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis and sees its fair share of motorcycle-noise-tolerant seniors who come to fish in the lake.
But GKMA didn’t stop there. Around 2019, the club received a Ministry of Tourism grant to develop Greenstone Mountain. Working with the community, including Indigenous and disabled workers, they rebuilt the road for easy RV access, created a day-use area with shade structures and picnic tables, built fencing and bridges and added two fishing docks to the lake. The result? A thriving destination for off-roaders, hikers, families, and anglers.

Stewardship of the entire area is a symbiotic relationship between its components. The grant allowed for a new staging area just above the Pendleton Recreation Site for off-road enthusiasts, and the campsite fees contribute funds toward maintaining the trail network. This makes sense, as most campers come for the trails.
“The dirt bike community is just a huge, big family. Everybody gets along, it’s just so nice. People just love coming to the lake. They love the campsite; they always come back,” Dennis says proudly. “The government uses us as an example to the other campsites. This is how you do it.”

GKMA’s goal is to keep the trails and campground available for off-road fun in perpetuity, and the club continues to do everything in their power to retain that reputation. “We’re about in the middle of a ten-year stewardship agreement, and we’ll never let it go. This is developed for us, for our children and our grandchildren. We take good care of it.”
